Dowler wins CASCAR National event in front of hometown crowd EDMONTON, AB (August 2, 1998) Edmonton native Kevin Dowler raced into the record books on Sunday afternoon by becoming the first western-based CASCAR Castrol Super Series driver to win a National event. The Ford Quality Care Taurus racer took the lead with five laps remaining in the 110-lap Bumper to Bumper Motorsport Classic 300km road course event on the tarmac of Edmonton's City Centre Airport and enjoyed a solid 11.5 second lead at the finish. UAP/NAPA Pontiac Grand Prix driver Robin Buck, of Oakville, ON looked set to win it all, but got tangled up with a backmarker on lap 105 and spun. Buck recovered to hold onto second for his first ever podium finish. Rounding out the podium finishers was Pete Vanderwyst of St. Thomas, ON (Loctite Chevrolet Monte Carlo). It was the first road racing outing of Vanderwyst's career and he was overjoyed at finishing third.
