Fredericton Alex Nagy review

Alex Nagy's ...

Alex Nagy's #93 AC Delco Snap On Tools Chevrolet Monte Carlo New Brunswick CASCAR Castrol Super Series East CARQUEST 300 Race Report September 15, 1998

Nagy wins in New Brunswick

FREDERICTON, NB It's been a few years since Alex Nagy last won a CASCAR Castrol Super Series race. But the Brantford, Ontario racer returned to victory lane in dominant fashion with his wire-to-wire win in the CARQUEST 200 at New Brunswick Int'l Speedway, in Fredericton, on Sunday afternoon.

Driving in his final race with sponsorship from AC Delco, Nagy's Chevrolet Monte Carlo led every lap of Sunday's race on the 1/3-mile oval. Combined with his second-place showing in the CARQUEST 300, just one week earlier, Nagy proved that he's truly one of the front-runners on Canada's top stock car tour.

"It is good," replied Nagy when asked if he enjoyed reminding people that he was still capable of winning CASCAR races. "I think it's important that people know we're a winning team. We're probably in the top three in all-time wins since we joined in '93. We didn't have much to prove, except to ourselves. More than anything, it's great for the crew." Throughout the 200 lap event, Nagy was hounded throughout by Dodge driver DJ Kennington. On several occasions, Kennington 'rubbed' Nagy, but never enough to spin him. From victory lane, Nagy credited DJ with running a hard, clean race.

"DJ raced me great all day," continued the driver of the AC Delco / Snap On Tools / Thomson Signs / Markham Driveline Chevrolet Monte Carlo. "And with [Sean] Dupuis and [Ron] Beauchamp not far behind, those guys race you clean and hard, but would never turn you around. If they would have had a better car than me, that would be fine, but they didn't. DJ was better than us at about mid-race, but my car just stayed good."

For the final run to the checkered flag, Nagy felt comfortable that he had the car to make it to the finish.

"We were able to open it up around that last caution and then at the end, DJ gave it that last gasp and I expected that. He didn't turn me around. It was a battle and it was a good run. The AC Delco / Snap On Tools Chevy was great all day, and it was really good to finish off the year strong, at the last two CARQUEST events."

Following the race, Nagy was asked if it felt good to finish his association with AC Delco on a winning note. "Yes, this is a good way to end it. We'll miss them and we appreciate everything they did for us over the past five years. We didn't get good at the end of the season because we're looking for a new sponsor... we did this because we have a great team and we got stuff sorted out. It wasn't until the season was about halfway through that we found some of the troubles that were bothering us in many of the races," continued Nagy.

"We knew we had a good car all the time, but didn't have much good luck and we had some bad pieces. It was just great that the car held together today and we were able to lead the whole race." With the win and his dominant performance, Nagy scored one of the biggest paydays in the history of CASCAR racing. He picked up $7,000 from Tenneco Automotive for leading laps 50, 100 and 150. The prize fund had been accumulating since very early in the season.

"We had an idea that if we could lead [laps] 50, 100 and 150 that maybe we were in for some money. We didn't know how much, but I hear it's $7,000. And with about $4,000 to win, and the pole money and other bonuses, we're probably looking at about $14,000 to $14,500. It's our biggest payday ever and maybe the biggest in CASCAR history. I'd like to thank all the contingency sponsors, like Tenneco Automotive and Champion Spark Plugs, for their support."
