Tuesday September 5, 2000: Hamilton's Dave Jacombs in the #88 Speedy Auto Service/Raybestos Brakes Taurus had his hopes for a top ten in the National Point Standings dashed on Sunday in the CARQUEST 300 by lapped traffic and some aggressive driving. Jacombs who stated after being sidelined, "Lap fifty is far to early to be driving as aggressively as the cars behind me were. There were two lapped cars in front of me who were racing side by side and I was just waiting for them to get single file when I got spun from behind by another competitor."
Jacombs weekend did not start out as good as he would have liked in the Whitlock Motorsports prepared back up car as the Speedy Taurus posted the 16th fastest time in time trials after sitting on the pole here in May. They continued to campaign this weekend in a back up car as there is still no sign of their car and equipment that was stolen from a Montreal area hotel while at the St. Eustache event early in August. This theft severely jeopardized the finish of the season for this team and they have struggled for the final three events as Jacombs says it has just not been the same since the loss of their car.
With qualifying finished Jacombs lined up for the CARQUEST 300 on Sunday in the twenty- third position. The #88 Speedy team knew they had a much better car than the starting position, as they showed on Friday night in the 100-lap qualifier. Jacombs was just into the top ten when two, much slower lapped cars decided to race in front of him and several other top contenders in the series. The #88 Speedy Taurus slowed for a lap or two to allow them to straighten out when some overzealous driving from behind caused a wreck that would take D.J. Kennington and Carl Harr out of contention as well. These three drivers were all in the top ten in the National Point Standings and were decidedly upset with the events on the track. The Speedy Taurus was taken behind the wall where it was determined that the damage was so extensive that they were done for the day. A very disappointed Dave Jacombs said after the race "We had several cars make up this thirty nine car field that would normally not qualify. Thirty-six cars starting here is more than enough to put on a great show for the fans. We are thrilled that we pulled off a third place finish in the Eastern Championship Points but disappointed in not making the top ten in National but we will go after it again next year."
The #88 Jacombs Racing Team were happy to have the support of Speedy Auto Service, Southwest Ontario Region Manager, Bert Gregory and his son David and Roger Noseworthy and his son Brent from Tenneco Automotive for the race on Sunday. Dave Jacombs and the team also wish to thank all their valued sponsors for their support in 2000 and look forward to continued mutual success in 2001.
