Jacombs Finishes 25th At Vancouver Indy
Vancouver, BC: Hamilton's Dave Jacombs and the #88 Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust Team had what looked like another promising outing going when a fellow competitor ran over the front of the Jacombs Racing Taurus and effectively ended their shot at a top ten finish.
Jacombs and the Speedy Team worked hard all day Thursday and Friday in preparation for their inaugural visit to the streets of Vancouver. After first round qualifying Jacombs was deemed the seventeenth quickest of thirty competitors. This Speedy driver felt they could do better so along with crew chief Tim Ellas they went back to the drawing board. Changes were made to the gear and shocks in hopes that the car would be quicker during the second qualifying session and then the CASCAR 100 on Saturday afternoon. They did not have an opportunity to test the changes in the second qualifying session on Saturday morning as rain had soaked the track during the night and rain tires were needed to travel around the course.
During the early part of the 100 km event, Jacombs was hindered by fuel spilling from the #14 car of John Fitzpatrick ahead of him. After a few laps this situation cleared itself up and Jacombs steadily picked off spots and by lap seventeen of the twenty-nine lap event was into eleventh position. A careless move by part time competitor in the series and veteran road racer, Robin Buck caused extensive damage to the front of the Speedy Auto Service Taurus and Jacombs was forced to pit for repairs. When they returned to the track they were down seven laps and could only manage a twenty-fifth place finish. A very disappointed Jacombs said after the race, "This was a very bad situation. I saw Robin coming from way behind me so I stayed high and up against the wall as I could see that he was not going to be able to slow down in time. He basically used me as his brakes and I am quite disappointed that a fellow competitor would do this. It looks as if it has cost us two positions in the points as well. The Speedy Taurus was coming into its own as the laps went on and I know we would have had a shot at a top ten finish today if not for this incident."
Jacombs unofficially has moved back to sixth in the Castrol Super Series Point Standings something he hopes to rectify in the final weekend of the season at Delaware Speedway on Sept. 28 to 30th. The 100 lap qualifying races are also full points events so there is an opportunity to make back some of the ground lost in Vancouver.
Podium finishers included 1. #76 Al Turner 2. #35 Kevin Dowler 3. #02 Kerry Micks
