BOWMANVILLE, ON - Brantford's Alex Nagy took part in his second road course race of the CASCAR Castrol National Super Series season on Sunday afternoon at Mosport Park and emerged with a 20th-place finish. The AC Delco / Snap On Tools Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver started 16th in the 30 car field and was running 15th when he pitted on lap 39 of the 75 lap, 300 km race. Following his stop for fuel, Nagy started to experience transmission trouble and by lap 43 was without second and third gears.

"We stopped and took gas and two laps after, second and third gears got really loud," noted Nagy. "Just after I radioed in to tell the crew [about the noise], they broke going through Turn 2. Fourth [gear] was OK, so I got around to the pits in fourth."

Behind pit wall, the crew of the #93 Chevy team quickly replaced the broken transmission and returned Nagy to the race. "We put in another transmission; the guys were really fast. But the [gear] ratios were all wrong, so I was between gears." After the race, the AC Delco / Snap On / Thomson Signs / Courtesy Chev-Olds / Markham Driveline driver was disappointed with the transmission failure because he felt a top 10 finish was within his reach.

"The car was really good and it got better all the time," said Alex, who is 20th in the National points race following the third of four events. "I knew we weren't going to drive to the front, but I also knew we'd have a good, consistent car. Our goal was to make it into the top 10 and without the transmission trouble, we may have."

But all in all, Nagy enjoyed the experience of racing at Mosport Park. It was his first time to compete on the legendary road course and like many of his competitors, Nagy showed a marked improvement from his first practice laps on Friday until the time his transmission soured, near the halfway point of the race.

From his best of 1:49.844 seconds in the first practice session on Friday, Nagy was down to 1:37.137 by Saturday's time trial sessions. "I had a lot of fun and I learned a lot," said Nagy. "I hope we're back next year."

Turning to next weekend, Nagy will be competing in the fourth and final National race of the season, at Delaware Speedway Park. The CARQUEST 300 is the biggest stock car race in Canada and has a special place in Nagy's heart. The Brantford racer won the event in 1995. Qualifying for the CARQUEST 300 begins this Friday night (Sept. 4) with the Twin 100 heat races, with the 300 lap feature scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Race Summary:

Road racing specialist Scott Maxwell won Sunday's Canadian Auction Group 300 at Mosport Park. The Toronto driver was taking part in his first CASCAR race and emerged victorious following a race-long battle with CASCAR regular Robin Buck, himself a former road racer. Third place went to Barrie's Alan Turner. Following the third race of the National Super Series schedule, reigning champion Dave Whitlock leads the points chase with 898 points. Robin Buck, who has two runner-up showings in the Edmonton and Mosport road course outings, is second with 890 points. Round #1 (Calgary) winner, Peter Gibbons has 886.
