CASCAR West - Prince George Preview

KOMOKA, ON The CASCAR Castrol Super Series West tour heads west of the Rockies this Saturday night (July 4) for its fourth race of the season, the Auto Magic Tire 200 at PGARA Speedway in Prince George, BC. Calgary's Wade Lee is the Western points leader entering the event. The GM Goodwrench Service Pontiac Grand Prix driver has a 14 point lead over Saskatoon's Dan Shirley (AC Delco Chevrolet Monte Carlo), who won last weekend's race in Regina.

Kevin Dowler, of Edmonton (Ford Quality Care Service Taurus), is currently third in the point standings, just eight markers back of Shirley. Each of these talented drivers has one win under his belt so far this season, and will be looking to become the first two-time winner of '98 and in the process, gain an edge in the points chase as the Western series approaches the halfway point.

Dan Shirley is the defending winner of the Prince George race, and will have plenty of competition as several top British Columbia drivers are expected to make appearances this weekend. In addition to the usual BC cast, including Prince George's Steve Jefferson, Kelowna's Gil Gillette and Quesnel's Don Sales, rumor has it that the Larson brothers Rich and Ron are slated to return to action for this weekend's Auto Magic Tire 200.

According to Wade Lee, the 1/3-mile PGARA oval makes for one of the more physical races on the Western schedule. Before leaving his Calgary shop for the trip westward, Lee expects nothing out of the ordinary for this Saturday's race.

"It's going to be a fight to the end with Dan, Kevin and I, but it's good to be on top," said Lee. "There would have been a couple other guys in there, like Steve Jefferson and Kim Richard, but they lost motors last weekend and that hurt. Carl Harr and Donnie Sales are also in contention, so we'll see what happens during the next couple of events.

"We'd really like to come out of Prince George with the points lead. To us, it's kind of the halfway mark and we'll look at things after that. For whatever reason, we seem to be a little better on the bigger tracks and struggle a bit on the shorter ones. So, if we can get through the race at Prince George in good shape, it would mean that we're looking good. The track has long corners and it's got a small, fairly rough surface, which makes it hard to get a solid run on someone for a clean pass."

As an added bit of incentive for Wade Lee, he will be aided in the pits this weekend by his brother, Dacy, who is currently living in BC and taking a year off from racing. The younger Lee was fifth in the Western points in '97.

PIT NOTES: With the first of four National CASCAR Castrol Super Series events slated for July 24-26 at Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park, Wade Lee and the rest of the National contenders are well into their preparation process for the National championship races. Like several others, Lee is planning on using two cars one oval and one road course during the intense four-race schedule. "We're going to finish prepping the road course car as soon as we get back from Prince George, which will allow us to concentrate on getting the oval car ready for the Race City 'National' once we get back from the second BC race (the Gold Pan 150 at Quesnel's Gold Pan Speedway on July 18). The only thing that is a little strange for me will be using Dacy's car on the road courses. It's not a new car, but it's new to me, and I have to get used to it"... The next Eastern Super Series race is the Ford Quality Care 300 at Cayuga Speedway on July 11-12...
