Verhoeven wins CASCAR Sportsman Series opener at Mosport
BOWMANVILLE, ON - Dion Verhoeven opened his CASCAR Sportsman Series title defense with a win in Saturday night's season opener at Mosport Speedway. The Kerwood, ON resident started on the outside of the front row for the 100-lap feature race at the half-mile oval and quickly moved into the lead.
The McRoberts Pontiac Grand Prix driver survived an early challenge from polesitter Steve Munro of Carp, ON, and went on to lead every lap. Munro's Mattel Hot Wheels Chevy spun on lap 6 to bring out the first of three caution flags. Undeterred, the veteran racer fought back over the remainder of the race to take third-place at the finish.
Second place in the opener went to London, ON racer Mike Alguire. The A-DOR Construction Pontiac driver came home eight seconds back of Verhoeven. A total of 13 drivers participated in the Mosport feature. Only the top three finishers completed all 100 laps.
The next CASCAR Sportsman Series race is scheduled for Saturday, July 1 at Barrie Speedway as part of the MOPAR Canada Day Weekend at the newly resurfaced 1/3-mile tri-oval.
