Robin Buck won the 36 lap CASCAR Super Series race at the Molson Indy Toronto with a solid performance that brought him his second win in Toronto and first of the 2001 season.
As usual in Toronto, most of the action took place at corner 3, at the end of Lakeshore Boulevard. This was the corner Buck took the lead for the first time, and then the final time many laps later, but there was a lot of action in between.
Though Buck had the pole position with a new lap record of 1;19.369, it was Don Thomson Jr. who took the lead at corner one with a nice move down the inside. However, Buck regained the lead on lap two with a similar outbraking move at corner 3.
Just after this pass, a multi-car collision at the same corner 3 brought out the yellow flag. Howie Scannell started it with a spin while under braking. Four other cars ran into each other or the walls in avoidance. Scannell showed his anger by waving a fist at one of the Lapcevich brothers, but the replays did not show any contact before Scannell spun. Mosport Oval winner Mark Dilley was one of the cars involved, ripping a front left side panel which necessitated a pit-stop.
At the restart, Buck held the lead from Thomson Jr., Al Turner, Kerry Micks and D.J. Kennington. It was now Micks' turn to entertain at corner 3. On lap 14, Micks began the show with a great pass down the inside over Turner, his rear end sliding as he struggled for grip in the maneuver. This was the first placed driver in the championship making a risky pass on the second placed driver, and luckily they both behaved. On the next lap, Micks made a similar move on Thomson Jr. for second place.
Next target was Buck.
A few laps later, Micks made the move down the inside of corner 3 for the lead. This time however, the rear-end sliding finally broke loose and he spun. Buck continued along in the lead.
With only a few laps left, Bill Innes hit the wall at corner three, brining out a full-course yellow. At the restart Thomson Jr. got a brilliant start and passed Buck going into corner one. Thomson's lead was short-lived however as Buck regained the lead at corner 3 the same lap. From there Buck remained unchallenged for the win.
Micks, however was not finished with his corner three entertainment. D.J. Kennington bumped Micks into a spin, and he fell a few positions, eventually finishing 11th. Ron Beauchamp Jr, benefited by passing both cars into 4th but was later passed by Jeff Lapcevich.
