CASCAR Castrol Super Series West July 21, 1998

KOMOKA, ON It took until the fifth race of the CASCAR Castrol Super Series West season for the tour to register its first double winner. On Saturday night, at Quesnel, BC's Gold Pan Speedway, Wade Lee started third in the 'United Concrete & Gravel Gold Pan 150' and by lap 6, had notched the race's only lead change. The Calgary racer had a few adventures en route to the win, but would lead the rest of the way in the 150 lap affair. His other victory came in early June in Saskatoon.

At the finish, the GM Goodwrench-sponsored cars of Lee (Pontiac Grand Prix) and St. Albert, AB's Carl Harr (Chevrolet Monte Carlo) ran first and second. Another St. Albert native, Todd Nichol (Rocky Mtn. Sales Chevrolet Monte Carlo) was third for the GM podium sweep.

Lee was happy with his performance, which leaves him atop the Western point standings with a solid 72 point lead, after five events, over longtime rival Kevin Dowler (Edmonton / Ford of Canada Taurus). Harr is third, just 14 points behind Dowler.

"We qualified second fastest Donnie Sales was quickest," said Lee. "In the heat race, we had a good run we went from seventh to second, which wasn't too bad. In the 150 lap feature, they rolled the dice and inverted four spots, so I started third. We got a pretty good start.

"We were running along the bottom, which was good, because on that track [Gold Pan Speedway], it's hard to run well up high. We got by Dan Shirley (Saskatoon / AC Delco Chevrolet Monte Carlo) early on and were running second behind Kim [Richard Calgary / Chevrolet Monte Carlo]. Then, a few laps later, he just slid up the track, I got through, and that was pretty much it, from there." Lee had a few scary moments including a run-in with Gil Gillette and a deflating tire under caution but he survived them all and notched a convincing win over Harr.

"We didn't really have too many close calls. Once, after a caution, I got together a little bit with Gil Gillette, but nothing too serious. Then, on the last caution with like 35 laps left the right-front tire was going down. I hadn't realized it until after the yellow flag when the race re-started."

*** PIT NOTES: The CASCAR Castrol Super Series is back on track this weekend with the Mopar 300 at Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park. The first of four National series events to determine the 1998 CASCAR National champion, the Mopar 300 will draw the best from both CASCAR's Eastern and Western series... Just days prior to the start of the National championship races, CASCAR officials announced their participation in the first annual Motorfest '98, a three-day tribute to the Canadian motorsports. Motorfest '98 will be held Aug. 24-26 on the connecting 'Skywalk' walkway between Toronto's Union Station and the CN Tower and in the Roundhouse Park at the base of the CN Tower. In addition to over a dozen CASCAR Castrol Super Series stock cars, other racing vehicles will be displayed. The event will also be highlighted by bands, barbecues and celebrity appearances. Trizec/Hahn is the force behind the show, which will be part of the event schedule leading up to the third round of CASCAR's National Championship, the Canadian Auction Group 300km, on the road course at Mosport on Aug. 28-30. For more information about Motorfest '98, contact John Booth at (416) 805-9003.
