PUROLATOR 500, Atlanta, Ga. -- Ernie Irvan established himself as the hottest driver of the early part of the 1994 season as he sped to his second straight victory, taking the 328-lapper at the 1.522-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway. With the win, Irvan gave Goodyear a victory in the race many figured would belong to Hoosier Tire.
Irvan led 98 of the final 120 laps, and rookie Jeff Burton ended up forth. Morgan Shepherd, the event's defending champion, came up .3ths short at the end and finished second. Darrell Waltrip came up to take third place, followed by Burton and mark martin in fifth. Irvan's victory tightened his grip on first place in the Winston Cup point standings, which he led by 101 points over Mark Martin, who took second place away from Dale Earnhardt. Earnhardt finished 12th in the race.
