"This weekend's race should be an exciting one for the fans. NASCAR changed the spoiler and air dam rules for this weekend. Since Jeff Gordon already wrapped up the championship, NASCAR saw the opportunity to make changes in an effort to improve the competition and to see more side-by-side racing." --Ken n Schrader, driver of the Skoal Bandit Racing Chevrolet

KEN SCHRADER: NOTES AND QUOTES ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY

"We tested at Atlanta Motor Speedway last week," said Andy Petree car owner/crew chief of the No. 33 Skoal Bandit Racing Chevrolet. "We brought a new car and the car we will race this weekend for the test, but decided the car we raced at Charlotte was better. Since NASCAR was considering making rule changes on the spoiler and air dams, we went ahead and tested with the proposed changes. We mostly saw reduced speeds on the frontstretch and backstretch, but increased speeds in the turns. I think it will be a good change for all the manufacturers and hopefully it will make the race more exciting for the fans."

In last year's NAPA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the No. 33 Skoal Bandit Racing Chevrolet entered the event trailing 10th place by a mere 13 points in the driver standings. The no. 33 had a decent run going until it came down pit road for a two-tire pit stop. During the pit stop, an official noticed a small piece of rubber burning on the right front brake rotor and held the No. 33 in the pits. This incident relegated the No. 33 back to 25th, but rallied back to finish 20th. The 20th-place finish secured Schrader the final spot on the Waldorf-Astoria stage at the 1997 NASCAR Awards Banquet. The Skoal Bandit Racing Chevrolet ran among the top 10 for most of last weekend's AC Delco 400 at North Carolina Speedway. The crew's speedy pit stops allowed Schrader to gain positions in the pits and advance him through the field quickly. Schrader eventually finished 14th after the No. 33 became slightly loose.

The Skoal Bandit Racing team will use "Black Bart," the same car they ran at Charlotte , Michigan, California and Darlington.

Schrader will pull double duty this weekend driving the No. 15 Oakwood Homes Chevrolet in the Stihl 300 on Saturday. In three starts in the Busch Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Schrader has one top-five finish.
