Elliott's father passes away

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. (Sept. 18, 1998) George Elliott, patriarch of the Elliott racing family, passed away Friday morning at his home in Dawsonville, Ga. He passed away due to complications after a cancerous brain tumor was removed in May.

Elliott, 74, is survived by wife Joyce and his three children, Ernie, Dan and Bill. He is preceded in death by his first wife Mildred in 1991.

Bill Elliott, driver of the No. 94 McDonald's Ford, will not drive in this weekend's NASCAR Winston Cup Series MBNA Gold 400 at Dover Downs International Speedway in Dover, Del.

Elliott's replacement driver will be NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division standout Matt Kenseth. This will be Kenseth's first career NASCAR Winston Cup Series start.

George Elliott was instrumental in getting his sons involved in racing. He owned a building supply company that financed their racing ventures in the 1970s. The brothers made their mark in NASCAR in the '80s, with Bill winning the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship in 1988. Both Ernie and Dan continue to be important assets in the operation of Bill's two NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams, by supplying engines and gears and transmissions, respectively.

Elliott, a graduate of North Georgia College, was a commissioned office in the Navy. He was also an educator, having taught at two elementary schools -- Lumpkin County (Ga.) and Westside Elementary in Dawson County (Ga.). He later became principal of Westside Elementary. Elliott owned a Ford dealership in Dahlonega, Ga., but sold it in the mid-eighties.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. EDT at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Dawsonville, Ga., with a burial following at McKee's Chapel United Methodist Cemetery in Dawsonville, Ga.
