Bodine to throw out first pitch at Yankees' game

NEW YORK (Aug. 19, 1998) Geoff Bodine will bring a taste of the nation's fastest growing sport to the national pastime when the Philips Ford driver throws out the first pitch at Monday's New York Yankees-California Angels American League Major League Baseball game at Yankee Stadium. "Growing up in New York, it's a big league thrill to be able to throw out the first pitch at a Yankees' game," said Bodine, a native of Chemung, a small town in upstate New York. "And the fact that I'll be able to see the 1998 Yankees, as they go for a record number of wins, makes it even better." Bodine's No. 7 Mattei Motorsports Ford will be on display and fans will be given a souvenir baseball card featuring a picture of Bodine and his racing career statistics. During the seventh inning stretch, Philips will give away seven baseballs autographed by the last two Yankee pitchers to toss perfect games, David Wells and Don Larson. Also, two additional Philips Consumer Communications products will be given away each inning. Winners will be announced over the stadium's public address system and on the ballpark's Jumbotron screen. Fans entering the stadium will get a close up look at the Philips Ford, which will located by the "Louisville Slugger" bat landmark. Members of the Philips team's show car crew will be on hand to answer questions about the car and NASCAR racing in general. The tossing of the ceremonial first pitch will be part of the pre-game activities at about 6:30 p.m. Bodine is approaching a career milestone, his 500th start on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, the "major league" of the 13 NASCAR stock car racing divisions. Bodine has won 18 races, taken 37 Bud Poles, 98 top-fives, 181 top-10s and won more than $12.3 million. Cited as one of NASCAR's "50 Greatest Drivers" earlier this year -- NASCAR's 50th Anniversary year -- Bodine will add yet another milestone to his brilliant racing career when he starts his 500th race. The feat is scheduled to fall at the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 11. Source: NASCAR Online
