Late Race Accident Forces Riggs To 34th-Place Finish
BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 28, 2004) -- Driver Scott Riggs wasn't able to complete the mission he came to Bristol Motor Speedway with0x2022finish the 500-lap event with all of the fenders on his car.
Despite the razzle dazzle of the Harlem Globetrotters Chevrolet he drove, Riggs' day ended with an accident on lap 407, forcing him to a 34th place finish in Sunday's Food City 500.
The Valvoline Chevy, dressed in a specially designed red, white & blue Harlem Globetrotters paint scheme, rolled off pit road from the 28th position. When the green flag dropped, Riggs quickly found his hands full as he worked to pilot a tight race car around the half-mile oval.
A couple of routine pit stops by the Valvoline crew helped dial in the No. 10 machine and Riggs began running lap times equal to the leaders.
"This is Nextel Cup racing," Riggs said. "You have to be on the money when the green flag drops. The changes the guys made in the pits really helped and we were able to keep up with the leaders, but we were already a lap down at that point.
"We were good on the track in the second half of the race, but on the long run we got a little free off and tight in the middle."
With just 93 laps remaining in the short-track competition, two race cars wrecked ahead Riggs'machine. Following instruction from his spotter, he slowed his Chevrolet as the yellow flag waved, but was sent into the backstretch wall when the No. 45 car (Kyle Petty) got into the back of him.
"The caution came out and we slowed down and I guess Kyle didn't get on the brakes fast enough," Riggs explained. "This is Bristol -- things happen fast here. I know he didn't mean to do it and I've been on the other side of that situation, so I'll just blame it on racing. Still, it's just an unfortunate way to end the day."
Kurt Busch led Rusty Wallace, Kevin Harvick, Sterling Marlin, and Matt Kenseth across the finish line to pick up the victory.
The NEXTEL Cup series will be back in action Sunday, April 4, at Texas Motor Speedway in Ft. Worth. The event will be broadcast on FOX, beginning with a pre-race show at 12:30 p.m. EST.
