Back Home in Tennessee, Marlin Eager To Go Short-Track Racing

BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 22, 2006)-- Known as the world's fastest half-mile, Bristol Motor Speedway is not only a fan favorite on the NASCAR Nextel Cup circuit, but also a favorite of many competitors, including Waste Management driver Sterling Marlin.

Marlin, who will start his 43rd event at the historic .533-mile bullring this weekend, points to short-track racing as one of the highlights of each season. His record there includes three top-fives and 18 top-10 finishes.

"I love racing these short tracks," said Marlin. "It's fun and exciting and a great show for the drivers and the fans. There's never a dull moment out there. Bristol is as much about experience and quick thinking as it is about a good race car. If you can get behind the wheel of a fast machine, it's just an added bonus."

A native of Tennessee, Marlin has been competing at Bristol Motor Speedway since 1983. While Columbia, Tenn., Marlin's hometown, is more than three hundred miles from the half-mile oval, he still considers it his home track.

"Bristol is like home for me," said Marlin. "The fans there are great and they always pull for their hometown driver. The Nextel Cup series doesn't visit any other tracks in Tennessee, so Bristol is a pretty special place for me."

Crew chief Doug Randolph predicts that between Marlin's experience and the speedy No. 14 Waste Management Chevrolet they plan to take with them, the team will bring home a strong finish.

"The whole team is looking forward to going to Bristol this weekend," said Randolph. "Sterling has a strong history there and knows how to get around. We'd certainly like to get a win on Sterling's home track this weekend--that would be the ultimate prize."

"I've had a few top-five finishes here in the past," said Marlin. "But we've never brought home the trophy. I'd like nothing more than to get a victory at one of my favorite places--a short track in Tennessee."
