Jeff Burton knocked out the quickest lap for NASCAR Nextel Cup teams at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a time of 182.778 mph. It is Burton's third pole of the season and fifth of his career.
"It was a good lap for us," said Burton. "I was tight in some areas and loose in some areas. I think I left a little bit out there, but I ran as hard as I thought I could run and come back I thought I got all of it, but I was a little conservative in a few places."
Burton's teammate Clint Bowyer was second fastest with a lap of 182.771 mph. Bowyer and Burton had to make a quick exit from IMS to head for practice and qualifying for tonight's Busch series race at ORP.
"It's going to be a big day," said Bowyer. "The first part of it is over. Qualifying is so big here at Indy, and this is my first time being here. I wanted to start up front. Track position is everything here."
Bowyer makes history with his lap, becoming the best Raybestos Rookie of the Year starter in the races history.
Newlywed Kurt Busch was third posting a 182.752 mph, "They gave me a great car and that is all I can ask for."
Kasey Kahne and JJ Yeley complete the top five.
Notably, defending race winner Tony Stewart qualified 32nd.
"It'll make for more fun on Sunday because I will have to pass a lot of cars," said Stewart. "That'll make it fun in itself."
Fifty cars attempted to qualify for the forty-three car field; failing to make the show were Paul Menard, Michael Waltrip, Johnny Sauter, Kevin Lepage, Stephen Leicht, Bobby Hamilton, Jr. and Derrike Cope.
