Winner: Kurt Busch, driver of the #5 Kellogg's Chevrolet
Top-five finishers: Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Mark Martin and Kevin Harvick.
Race recap:
Kyle Busch pushed his Goodyear Eagles well beyond the full fuel pit stop window of about 85 laps on Sunday as he logged 124 circuits on them to win the Nextel Cup race that went an extra eight overtime laps due to two closing laps cautions.
Busch led a race-high 107 laps, including the last 69. However, an accident at lap 299 between Clint Bowyer and Brian Vickers had NASCAR extend the race for a green/white/checkered flag finish. But, a further delay came when Michael Waltrip rear ended Robby Gordon's car under caution. Fuel woes were a concern for many, but tires were not. The race had 11 cautions for 49 laps and 21 lead changes among 11 drivers. Busch had a 0.406 second margin of victory.
With just seven races remaining until the Chase for the Championship's 10 contenders are decided, the points standings saw a few dramatic shifts in positions. Most notably current champ Tony Stewart falling from seventh to out of the top 10 into 11th due to an accident. Jimmie Johnson still leads with 68 points over Matt Kenseth, followed by Jeff Burton, Kyle Busch, Mark Martin, Kasey Kahne, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon and Greg Biffle.
Goodyear comment from Rick Heinrich, product manager of stock car racing: "We were happy with the tire grip on the particularly hot 134 degree track surface. The tire combination at Loudon looked good all weekend. It was a great race at one of NASCAR's most unusual tracks. It's a short track with fast long straightaways and a fairly flat 12 degree track surface. The Eagle tires complemented the track and allowed for side-by-side racing all day long."
Companion race:
The NASCAR Busch Series' New England 200 on Saturday was won by Carl Edwards, who held off Kevin Harvick by 0.604 seconds, followed by Denny Hamlin, Paul Menard and Clint Bowyer. The seven cautions for 27 laps were attributed to numerous spins, contact, and debris such as one driver's glove being thrown out the car window. Bowyer was the dominant driver, leading 127 laps before getting caught in the pits when the seventh caution flag came out. Edwards took the lead and held it the final 58 laps. The only other lap leader was Kyle Busch from the first lap through 15th. The victory makes Edwards the 20th different driver to win one of the 20 Busch Series races run at NHIS.
In other NASCAR action running in the Craftsman Truck Series at Memphis Motorsports Park in Tennessee, Jack Sprague started from the pole and also won the 202-lap event on the ¾-mile oval, beating Erik Darnell by 0.251 seconds. There were seven cautions for 30 laps and nine lead changes among six drivers. Sprague averaged 88.367 mph.Todd Bodine leads the points contest, with David Reutimann on his heels.
