MIAMI (Nov. 8, 1999) – Homestead-Miami Speedway officials are urging race fans attending the Nov. 11-14 Pennzoil 400 presented by Kmart and HotWheels.com 300 weekend to leave early and consider using alternative routes to attend the long-awaited debut of NASCAR Winston Cup Series racing in South Florida.
The Speedway has been working with the Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida’s Turnpike Authority and the Homestead and Florida City police departments to ease access for the 80,000 spectators and participants expected for each race day.
"We are strongly encouraging fans to arrive early," stressed Curtis Gray, President of Homestead-Miami Speedway. "We have planned a number of activities to provide fun and entertainment for the entire family, both before and after the races each day.
"We are confident that the cooperation among the different agencies will expedite traffic to and from our facility," Gray added. "If fans plan on arriving early, this can help us maintain an even traffic flow."
The Speedway will have live entertainment on two stages behind the grandstands before and after both Saturday and Sunday races. There will also be plenty of food and family activities, including interactive exhibits. Over 80 driver souvenir trailers will be located on Speedway Blvd., near the main entrances.
The Speedway has designated three main access routes to the facility, using both Krome Avenue (Route 997) and U.S. 1 in addition to the Florida Turnpike. Fans from Western or Northern Florida are encouraged to use Krome Avenue, which is access via Interstate 75 to U.S. 27 South. Fans coming from Eastern Miami-Dade County, including Miami Beach and Kendall, are encouraged to access the track via U.S. 1.
Vehicles using the Florida Turnpike can access the Speedway from three exits. Exit 9A is recommended for vehicles needing access to registration or the Speedway Infield. Exit 6 (Speedway Blvd.) and Exit 2 (Campbell Drive) traffic will be directed to the lots to the north and west of the Speedway. Exit 1 (Palm Drive) traffic will utilize the lots to the west of the Speedway. Palm Drive is also recommended for traffic planning to return to the Florida Keys following the races.
A limited number of two-event tickets are still available by calling (305) 230-RACE. For additional information, visit the Speedway’s new official web site, www.homesteadmiamispeedway,com.
