For the third race weekend in a row Mother Nature has wreaked havoc on the NASCAR Cup and Busch series schedules. An icy rain began falling in Bristol, Tennessee late Thursday night, and remained steady through the day on Friday.
Practice sessions for the Busch and Cup series were rained out as well as qualifying for NASCAR Nextel Cup series teams. The field for Sunday's Food City 500 will be set according to the new rule book provisions and not based on current points.
Defending Nextel Cup champion, Tony Stewart, will start from the pole position. Points leader Jimmie Johnson will slot fifth on Sunday's grid.
Three Roush Racing Fords are sandwiched in between the two Chevy drivers. Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards and Mark Martin round out the top five.
More Cup practice as well as NBS qualifying and the Mini-Sharpie 300 are set for Saturday; but weather radar does not look much better. The only good news is that Sunday (while chilly and around 42 degrees) is set to be sunny giving the green for the Cup series to get their event in.
The Cup race in Atlanta last weekend was rained out and had to be run on Monday morning. While rain did not hamper getting events started at Vegas, unseasonable temperatures and a persistent mist made for a less than glamorous race weekend--- and a soggy start to the NASCAR season.
