Busch series superstar Brian Vickers, who was named as the new driver of the No. 25 Chevy next season, will get his shot to run some races this year in the Winston Cup series. MB2 and Hendrick Motorsports have reached an agreement for Vickers to pilot the No. 01 Pontiac for the last four races of the 2003 season.
"Having the opportunity to gain Winston Cup experience with an established team like MB2 is really exciting," said Vickers. "The team has a great sponsor in the U.S. Army and the cars have Hendrick Motorsports engines under the hood, so it's a great situation."
Vickers, 19, is second in Busch series points, and desperately wanted to gain some seat time before his move to Cup replacing Joe Nemcheck in the Hendrick Chevrolet next year.
It is a perfect situation for Vickers and the No. 01 team. The No. 01 team has been using a revolving list of replacement drivers since their primary racer, Jerry Nadeau, was injured during a practice crash at the spring Richmond race.
"We have a great working relationship with Hendrick Motorsports and its engine department and we're happy to assist in Brian's transition to the Cup Series," said MB2 Team Manager, Jay Frye.
Mike Skinner has been subbing for the No. 01 team, and will continue through the Martinsville event.
Vickers has two Busch wins, and trails series rankings leader David Green by just 48 points.
