BURTON ON DOVER
"We haven't been that competitive at Dover the last few races there. It's such a tough place to figure out. The new tires have got us a little confused right now. It usually is better to get your car to handle on the bottom of the track, but it looked like last time that several teams had figured out how to run in the upper groove. Dover is just another example if how the tires have affected the way you set your cars up now. The notes that we used to rely on are pretty much useless.

"We had a fairly decent run going last year until someone spun in front of me and then I got tagged from behind because they couldn't get slowed up in time. We had a little damage to bumper and the left rear quarter panel, so we pitted to fix the damage and got back out there. We fought our way back to finish in the top 15.

Sam Pardon, the lead welder at Bill Davis Racing and an employee since January 1995, phoned the shop Monday to ask if he could use one week of his vacation to travel to New York and aid in the rescue efforts of the thousands of people still missing following the attack on the World Trade Center. He was joined by Lincoln Electric, a sponsor of both the Caterpillar and Amoco teams, to work at cutting and welding the tons of steel left in the rubble. Pardon is working the night shift and is staying at firehouse very close to ground zero. He is a member of the pit crew on the No. 22 Caterpillar team, so he will make his way back to Dover, Del., on Sunday.

This is not the first time Pardon has rushed to the rescue of many. Pardon collects hundreds of gifts around Christmas and brings them to a local Children's Hospital for the many children suffering from illnesses.
