Johnson tries to become first driver in modern era to win all three events at LMS
CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 9, 2003) -- Team Lowe's driver Jimmie Johnson is trying for another first this season -- becoming the first driver in Winston Cup history to sweep all three races at Lowe's Motor Speedway (LMS) when he takes to the track this Saturday night in the UAW-GM Quality 500.
Earlier this season, Team Lowe's Racing swept the May events at LMS with wins in the The Winston and the Coca-Cola 600. Johnson will once again get behind the wheel of his Lowe's Monte Carlo at LMS in an attempt to make history at the track that has quickly become the driver's best racetrack statistically. Out of the six Winston Cup races, including all-star events, that Johnson has competed in at LMS, he has posted two wins, two top-five and five top-10 finishes. His only finish outside the top-10 was his Winston Cup debut in the fall of 2001.
Jimmie Johnson quotes
ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT RETURNING TO LOWE'S?
"Our return to Lowe's Motor Speedway is coming at a really good time for us. Just over 100 points separate positions three throught six in the overall standings and we're just a little more than 120 points out of second place. Coming back home to LMS, a racetrack that we've proven we can win on, is huge when the points battle is this close."
DO YOU THINK YOU CAN BECOME THE FIRST DRIVER TO SWEEP ALL WINSTON CUP EVENTS AT LMS?
"NASCAR is so competitive and just because a team is good at a racetrack doesn't mean that it will be this season or the second time around this year. With that said, I think we have as good a chance as anyone to win this Saturday. The conditions should be similar to when we raced in May, maybe a little cooler. Lowe's is a great track for me and a track that you really need to be focused on to drive a loose race car. We're going to try hard to bring a win again at home and complete the sweep. We've been pretty good at completing sweeps; our performances at Dover last season and at Loudon earlier this year are evident of that."
CAN ANYONE CATCH THE NO.17 NOW THAT IS HAS OPENED THE DOOR A LITTLE BIT?
"I sure hope so. If they continue to have problems like that the last couple of weeks of the season, they might let a few of us back into the hunt. I still feel they are very much in control of the championship picture, but anything can happen. Team Lowe's and the rest of the teams need to keep the pressure on them and continue to race well."
