DOUBLE TOP-TEN FINISH FOR MI-JACK CONQUEST RACING AT GRAND PRIX OF TORONTO
Toronto, Ontario, July 9, 2006 -- Both Mi-Jack Conquest Racing drivers finished in the top-ten today at the Molson Grand Prix of Toronto. Charles Zwolsman the driver of the #34 Conquest Racing entry moved up five positions from his 14th place on the grid to finish ninth, while Canadian Andrew Ranger finished 10th aboard his #27 Tide car after starting a season high of sixth. Despite his tenth place finish Ranger remains fourth in the championship standings with 110 points, tied with Alex Tagliani.
Conquest Racing rookie, Charles Zwolsman, jumped up a few positions at the start and gained a couple more after contact between Nelson Philippe and Oriol Servia took both cars out. The 27-year-old Dutchman went on to finish ninth. Today's result equals his best finish in the Champ Car World Series.
"It was an eventful race. At the beginning I wanted to pass Yan Heylen as fast as possible and I did that. After, I was catching Da Matta but I got held up by Kasemets and that created a little incident with Clarke. Later on I had build up on my tires and I was just sliding around a lot for a few laps. We came in for tires but I still had difficulties with the car and I lost a lot of time in that stint," explained Zwolsman. "Near the end I was putting in some good lap times but we had already lost a lot of time. There were some good parts in the race and some bad parts but ninth is a good overall finish."
After putting in his second best qualifying performance in his Champ Car career yesterday with the sixth fastest time of the session, Andrew Ranger was hoping for as much success today, but it was not meant to be for the Canadian as the fuel strategy did not pan out as planned when the yellow flag came out near the end of the race. Having fallen one lap behind, Ranger was asked to go to the back of the field under yellow before the restart by race control in order to realign the cars, but a misunderstanding between Ranger and his engineer caused him to lose a position to his team-mate when he traveled through the pit lane instead of letting the lead lap cars go by on the track. Ranger had to settle for tenth.
"I had a good start to the race and we were trying to play with our fuel strategy but with the yellow at the end it did not play out as we wanted. When they realigned the field there was a miscommunication between me and my engineer and I lost a position there," said Ranger. "I guess that's racing, we will just have to look forward to the next race and hope to do well in Edmonton in two weeks."
Next up for the Mi-Jack Conquest Racing Team will be round eight of the Champ Car World Series in Edmonton, Alberta from July 21 -- 23 at Finning International Speedway.
