Christopher Bell blindsided by spotter split ahead of Coca-Cola 600: “It was Stevie’s decision”

Christopher Bell addresses the sudden departure of his long-time spotter Stevie Reeves.

Just days after taking the win at the NASCAR All-Star Race, Christopher Bell's spotter Stevie Reeves separated from the driver. Now, heading into the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, he now partners with Matt Philpott, who will be taking over Reeves' duties.

The timing of this change couldn't be worse for the Oklahoma native as he heads into the race defending his 2024 win. Now, after four years with Reeves since his Cup debut, Bell will have to adapt quickly to this different setup. Spotters, after all, serve as a driver's eyes out on track. They provide information to the driver about track position, approaching cars, possible dangers, and of course, opportunities.

A spotter and a driver have to be aligned and trusting of each other. This, as you'd expect, takes time.

"I was surprised as well," Bell told the media at Charlotte Motor Speedway. "It was all Stevie's decision. He made the decision on his own to quit, and that is all I'm going to say."

The abrupt end to the partnership has certainly got fans questioning what took place for this to happen so suddenly, especially after a race win that resulted in a $1 million payday.

Bell was asked what differences he expects come race day.

“That is a really good question. I haven’t driven for Matt (Philpott) - I call him Philpott, so that caught me off guard. He doesn’t have a ton of spotting experience, so I’m going to be spending some time on the roof with him today during the Xfinity race, just to see what he’s seeing, see how he calls it.

"We had a really good exercise this week doing an iRace, with him spotting me, and I felt like that was really good to learn his language and what he means when he says certain things.

"We went through a couple of different items. I wanted something a little bit different. The team wanted something a little bit different, so I thought the iRacing experience was really good, and hopefully, we get a little bit closer during the Xfinity race, but I’m sure it will be a period of time, through many races, before we are fully in sync.”

Bell goes into this weekend wanting to defend his Coca-Cola 600 title and will be feeling the pressure of not only that, but the change in his team. Hopefully for him, the duo's practice on iRacing pays off and they can have a strong, safe race.
