Stott leaving SABCO By Marty Smith
MOORESVILLE, N.C., (May 17, 1999) Sterling Marlin No. 40 Coors Light Chevrolet As of May 17, 1999 Starts Avg. Start Avg. Finish Total Pts. 11 22 19 1166 Corrie Stott, crew chief for Sterling Marlin and the No. 40 Coors Light Chevrolet, and Team SABCO announced Monday that they have mutually agreed to part ways. "This is an awfully rough and tumble sport, and one where you must get results," Stott said. "We had high hopes early (this season), but a wreck at Daytona and some trouble at Rockingham really hurt us. Starting in a hole like that is really tough."
Stott directed the No. 40 team for just over a year -- he was hired in April of 1998 -- and during that time Marlin drove to seven top-10 finishes and 19 top-15s, but never achieved the level of success that was expected of him. Thus, it was time for a change.
"It just wasn't the performance level we were looking for," Stott said. "Sterling is much better than that. There needed to be a change - hopefully it will work out for us both."
According to Stott, the split was due to a lack of communication between himself and Marlin on the track. This is not to say that the two aren't still friends, however.
"Sterling and I get along just fine," he said. "Communication is what got us. Communicating what he wants from the car to me is where we had a little problem. You hear about the importance of 'jelling' all the time. We tried to get that, and we did get a lot better over the past year, but there was still something missing.
"It's not his fault or my fault, it's just one of those things."
During the search for Stott's replacement, team manager Tony Glover will serve as interim crew chief. Meanwhile, Stott will weigh several options in the near future.
"Obviously you can't wait around for too long," he said. "I just need to see what my best options are for my long term goals. I'll just chill out for and see what happens. There are many directions I'd like to take my career, I just have to wait and see what's the best situation."
