Dale Jarrett - Quick Facts & Thoughts Las Vegas 400 - March 7, 1999

Career Record Starts: 357 Wins: 18 Poles: 7 Earnings: $15,518,073

* Starting from the pole position in the 1998 Las Vegas 400, Dale Jarrett led 40 of the 267 laps. He ran in the top three for a majority of the race until his engine expired with only 48 laps left. Jarrett finished 40th. * In last weekend's Dura Lube/Big K 400 at the North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham, N.C., Jarrett started 11th and collected his first top-five finish of the 1999 season with a second-place finish. For his finish, Jarrett netted $7,500 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Ford Credit donates money for breast cancer research for every top-three finish and every pole position that Jarrett earns. * Currently Jarrett is 13th in the point standings, with a total of 227 points.

Taking A Lap Around Las Vegas Motor Speedway With Dale Jarrett: "To begin with, it's a really wide race track that's kind of D-shaped. You actually need to run down towards the bottom of the track at the start/finish line and then you drive the car straight towards the wall entering into turn one. You then drive the car out wide and then right to the very bottom, right on the white line, with good tires. The fun thing about Las Vegas is as the tires get a little worn, you can run different grooves and make passes on the outside. It's not that you have to be there (on the bottom), but with good tires, right on the bottom is the place. "The exit out of turns one and two is a place where the car tends to push. But there's a lot of room back there. The exit is wide and flattens out, even more than what the corner is already. With the back stretch not being very long, you make a wide entrance into turn three. You almost go over a little bit of a crest in three and the car wants to get light at that point. The exit out of turn four is so similar to Michigan, it's almost scary. You drive the car so straight towards the wall that it wants to push. From the wall, you go back straight down the racetrack. It sounds a little strange but definitely a fun place to race. There's not a whole lot of banking and handling comes into play. It's the type of track we seem to do well at."

Testing At Las Vegas (the Quality Care Service/Ford Credit team elected to test for two days here last week): "We decided to test for a couple of reasons," said Jarrett. "It's a track where we can learn a lot to use at other tracks, like Michigan and Richmond. We wanted to try some things with shocks and swaybars that we need to experiment with early on in the season. Plus it's a No Bull Five race and even though we're not eligible for the money, we need to finish in the top-five so we will be eligible for the Charlotte race."
