Dale Jarrett - Quick Facts & Thoughts New Hampshire 300, Sept. 19, 1999
Career Record
Starts: 380
Wins: 22
Poles: 7
Earnings: $18,237,880
Rebounding from two disappointing weekends (Bristol, finished 38th & Darlington, finished 16th), Dale Jarrett and the Quality Care Service/Ford Credit team got back on track with a third-place finish in the Exide Batteries 400 in Richmond. This was Jarrett's ninth top-five finish at RIR. Jarrett gained 102 points on second-place contender Mark Martin this past weekend in Richmond. His lead is up to 270 over Martin, with his total points at 3,858. He has collected 19 top-five finishes and 21 top 10s in 1999, while he has amassed 109 top fives and 159 top 10s in his Winston Cup career. Jarrett has led 13 of the 24 races this season. He has led a total of 615, with the last race he led in was the Southern 500 in Darlington (led 23 laps).
New Hampshire Stats: Out of nine races at NHIS, Jarrett has four top-five finishes, with his best finish being second place in 1996 (Jiffy Lube 300). His best starting position is third. In the 1998 CMT 300, Jarrett started seventh and finished fourth. Earlier this year in the Jiffy Lube 300, Jarrett started ninth and finish fourth, after a last lap tango for third position with Jeff Gordon.
Jarrett's New Hampshire Thoughts: "Two things you can say about Loudon - you know it's tough and you know it's always tight. Qualifying is a bit of a challenge because you only have one lap to try and get heat in your tires, while at the same time getting around those flat corners as smooth as you can. In the race, handling plays a key factor. There have been a number of times that fuel strategy has played a part in the outcome of the race. You just have to be ready for it and be thinking about it all the time. There are things you can do to conserve fuel. Obviously, I'm not going to tell you what we do, but common sense tells you the least amount of time you spend with your foot off of the gas pedal and still run good, then you're going to be able to get the best gas mileage out of your car. Our best race there was in 1996, when we ran second to Ernie (Irvan) who won his first win since his '94 accident in Michigan."
Jarrett & Team Extend Their Points Lead, Again: "When you're trying to win a championship, you have to be realistic and positive. The team that has, let's say, less than five problems in a season, then they probably have a good chance at winning or contending for the title. Being up front, obviously everyone is shooting for you. We're the ones in front, but everyone is trying to do their job, which is to finish as high as they can and win races, while at the same time put pressure on us. On the other side, we're trying to do our job and make sure we don't have problems and finish as high up as we can, if we can't win the race."
