Dallenbach may drive fourth Hendrick car at Indy by Shawn A. Akers
HARRISBURG, N.C. (July 15, 1998) Wally Dallenbach, who recently drove in three NASCAR Winston Cup Series races for Hendrick Motorsports in the No. 50 Budweiser Chevrolet, could be behind the wheel of a fourth Hendrick car in the Aug. 1 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Hendrick Motorsports President John Hendrick said Wednesday.
Dallenbach, who is currently without a full-time ride, has been at Indianapolis with Hendrick testing their cars all this week. "We are seriously considering running four cars at Indy this year," Hendrick said. "Wally has done a great job for us. We've got that 25 number and that 52 number, so we're thinking about it. Wally has been testing the 24, the 5 and the 50 some, along with an r&d and another car we've been considering." Hendrick said the decision on whether or not to run a fourth car at Hendrick could come as early as the end of this week. He said the three Hendrick team crew chiefs will evaluate Dallenbach's performance during the three-day test session at Indianapolis and team officials will pool their opinions on the endeavor. "It all depends on how they run up there," Hendrick said. "We're going to come back and talk with the crew chiefs and talk about the times and the speeds. We want to be competitive. We want to make sure we've got four competitive cars in that race. "We don't want to distract from Jeff and his run for the 'No Bull' million, or from Terry or Ricky's efforts. We've got the crews here, we've got a couple of other crew chiefs, too. We're in a position to do it, all we have to do is decide, and we'll do that this week." Hendrick said if the team decides to run a fourth car in the Brickyard 400, it will most likely carry the No. 25, with primary sponsorship from Budweiser. Released from his full-time duties as driver of the No. 46 TEAM Sabco First Union Chevrolet earlier in the year, Dallenbach was hired by Hendrick Motorsports to drive three NASCAR Winston Cup races in the No. 50 Budweiser Chevrolet in June in the absence of regular driver Ricky Craven, who was recovering from post-concussion syndrome. Dallenbach posted two top-10 finishes in three races, including 10th at Michigan in the Miller Lite 400 and a season-best seventh at Pocono in the Pocono 500. In his other outing, he finished 27th in the Save Mart/Kragen 350 at Sears Point. "Wally has done a great job for us," Hendrick said. "It was hard for us because he likes this organization, he likes the rides he was in. We were very pleased with his first two races, two top-10 finishes. Wally's done a great job and he's a great asset to Hendrick Motorsports."
