Darlington, SC - For the fourth time this season, Jeff Gordon, No. 24 National Guard ESGR/DuPont Impala SS, claimed a front-row starting position in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition. The four-time NSCS champion will start second in Saturday night's Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Ryan Newman, No. 39 U.S. Army Impala SS, qualified third for race 11 of the 2009 season.

Jeff Burton will roll off sixth in his No. 31 Caterpillar Impala SS to give Team Chevy three of the top-10 starters.

A total of 16 Impala SS drivers will take the green flag scheduled to waive at 7:20 p.m. tomorrow evening with live coverage provided by FOX TV, MRN Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio.

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S IMPALA SS -- Hits wall during qualifying lap

"I was pretty loose. I didn't expect to be that loose. Track temps were down, and (crew chief) Chad's (Knaus) final words were, 'Go like hell,' and off I went and didn't make it back (laughs). Unfortunately, I tore up a race car but we have great back-ups and we'll be out there tomorrow night and I'm looking forward to it."

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT IMPALA SS -- Qualified 2nd

"The guys have been doing an awesome job. They worked really hard on a lot of race stuff. We put it in qualifying trim and the car really came to life. That was a heck of a lap, man. But I tell you, Matt (Kenseth) put down an awesome lap."

***

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 39 U.S. ARMY IMPALA SS -- Qualified 3rd:

"It was a good run for the U.S. Army Chevrolet and we hope that gives us a top ten starting spot. It's a struggle to get the balance between one end of the race track and the other. We made two qualifying runs in practice so that was a good effort for us."
