CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Jan. 21, 2000) Veteran Dave Marcis, who will attempt to make his 33rd straight Daytona 500 in February and Realtree Outdoor Products have renewed their partnership for the NASCAR 2000 season, officials announced Friday. Marcis, the 58-year-old driver from Wausau, Wis., plans to compete in all 34 events on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule with continued sponsorship backing from Realtree Outdoor Products. The season opener at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 20 will mark a historic fifth decade of competition for Marcis in stock car racing and the fourth season of primary sponsorship by Realtree.
Marcis has qualified for 32 straight editions of the "Great American Race" and will once again use his No. 71 Chevrolet during Speedweeks 2000 and the season. Marcis' best finish in the Daytona 500 was sixth in 1975 and '78. He made his first start in 1968 when he qualified 35th and finished 20th.
"All the employees of Realtree are excited about our continued association with Dave Marcis," said Realtree President Bill Jordan. "We are delighted to be a part of his history-making attempt at five decades of starting the Daytona 500. Dave is truly an inspiration to the racing family and fans. He is a man of great integrity and we're honored to be by his side in 2000."
The former Wisconsin short track champion's first NASCAR event was that 1968 Daytona 500. In 1975 Marcis won his first NASCAR Winston Cup Series race, the Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville, and was the runner-up to Richard Petty for the championship.
While nearly all his former competitors have retired, Marcis has overcome obstacles as a low-budget team owner to pursue his aspirations and love of the sport of auto racing. Second only to racing, Marcis' love of the outdoors has truly made his union with Realtree a successful venture.
Because of his tireless dedication and passion for the sport, Marcis is a respected ambassador of NASCAR. Along with being the primary set-up driver for the True Value International Race of Champions, a position he has held since the 1970s, Marcis has also tested on various occasions for team owner Richard Childress in seven-time series champion Dale Earnhardt's cars.
Marcis' career milestones include: Current record holder for the most consecutive starts at the Daytona 500 (32); the most starts of any active series driver, second only to career leader Richard Petty; five NASCAR Winston Cup Series victories; 93 top-5 finishes; 221 top-10 finishes; 14 pole positions; and 867 starts in series events.
"Dave is a true pioneer of the sport; in fact, he is what NASCAR is all about" said Mike Helton, NASCAR's senior vice president and chief operating officer. "On behalf of everyone at NASCAR, we commend him on his accomplishments and thank him for his contributions over the past four decades to NASCAR racing.
"We wish Dave Marcis and Realtree Outdoor Products the best of luck as they enter the NASCAR 2000 season and beyond."
As he embarks on another milestone, Marcis, whose favorite motto is: "We have done so much with so little for so long, that we can now do anything with nothing" is quite modest when it comes to his achievements.
"It has been great running five decades in NASCAR and being associated with Bill Jordan and Realtree," Marcis said. "When there was speculation during the middle part of the '99 season that I was going to retire, you wouldn't believe the number of people who called and wrote letters telling me not to.
"I still really enjoy the sport of auto racing and can't wait to get to Daytona in February with my new 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Realtree Outdoors Products, makers of Realtree and Advantage camouflage, is based in Columbus, Ga.
