MCDOWELL MAKES HIS FIRST DAYTONA 500 APPEARANCE RUNNING FOR PRISM MOTORSPORTS
PRISM Motorsports Races Into the Daytona 500!
CORNELIUS, N.C., February 12, 2010 -- Michael McDowell raced his way into the Daytona 500 with a 14th-place finish in the first Gatorade Duel 150 at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday afternoon. Sunday's 52nd Running of the Daytona 500 will mark McDowell's first appearance in the Great American Race, and will mark PRISM's second appearance in just their second season. The team's effort places them in the 29th position of the starting line-up for Sunday's race. Despite not having a full-time sponsor, the team will run two cars throughout the entire 2010 season and is actively searching for sponsorship opportunities for the Daytona 500 and beyond.
"It is still unbelievable for me, I kept waking up last night just excited about being a part of the biggest race in the world," said McDowell. "It almost felt like being a kid with Christmas Eve jitters. I am very thankful for the opportunity and feel blessed to be among 43 of the world's best drivers."
McDowell raced mid-pack throughout most of the Gatorade Duel 150, and the No. 55 PRISM Motorsports crew utilized every opportunity to pit the car and improve its handling. When the caution came out on Lap 52 of the 60-lap race, the No. 55 headed down pit road one last time. Rookie crew chief, Zach McGowan, made a bold call for four fresh tires, knowing the impact that new tires can have around the 2.5-mile superspeedway. Despite many of McDowell's direct competitors staying out or only taking two tires during the final caution, McDowell sailed to the front of the go-or-go-home cars immediately after the green flag. When the checkered flag fell on the Gatorade Duel 150, McDowell finished in the 14th position, and was the highest finisher to race his way into the Daytona 500 field. McDowell and the No. 55 PRISM Motorsports team will line up 29th for the Daytona 500 on Sunday afternoon.
"We are so excited to have raced a car into the Daytona 500," said Randy Humphrey, co-owner of PRISM Motorsports. "Our team has made great strides over the last year, and we proved on Thursday that we can be competitive at NASCAR's top level. This would be a great opportunity for a company to get their name on the hood of our car for the Daytona 500 or any other race this season."
