Twenty-race stretch starts in Daytona for Team UPS.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 2, 2002 --- The Fourth of July will signal the start of a 20-race stretch to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship with the first of the next 20 races taking place where things began in 2002. The "Pepsi 400" at Daytona International Speedway introduces a grueling stretch of races at the end of which a champion will be crowned. Dale Jarrett and the #88 UPS Racing Team are poised to break into the top 10 in points after strong performances during the month of June. Jarrett's average finish during June was fifth, and Team UPS looks to carry that momentum to the third restrictor-plate race of the 2002 season. Additionally, FOX will wrap up its coverage of the 2002 season this Saturday night before NBC takes over for the rest of the season. Qualifying starts at 8:15 p.m. EST, Thursday, July 4th, followed by the 43rd running of the Pepsi 400 on Saturday, July 6th. Racing action begins at 7:30 p.m. EST.
Team UPS Ready For Third Superspeedway Test
With the third superspeedway event looming, manufacturer debates tend to become a hot topic of conversation. In an effort to achieve more parity among the four makes of cars currently racing in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, NASCAR announced changes to the spoilers of the Fords for the Pepsi 400. Ford teams will be able to reduce the spoiler size on the Taurus from 6 inches to 5-7/8 inches for the Pepsi 400 only. During the Daytona 500 in February, the Ford's rear spoiler was 5 ¾ inches tall and in April at Talladega, Ford's measurements were 6 inches tall.
"We had the same problem in Talladega that we had in Daytona before the rules change after the Twin 125s," Jarrett said. "We have too much drag. I know NASCAR and the manufacturers are working to make restrictor-plate racing better and more even for everybody.
"As for the race itself, our main concern is getting the race car to a point where I can race it as hard as I can the entire time. Robert Yates has the best engines out there so I know we'll be all right there. This type of racing just takes patience on everybody's part. If we can be lucky enough to avoid the big wreck that tends to always happen, we should be in good shape."
The Big Brown Truck And #88 Ford Taurus Go Head-to-Head
Fans of UPS's Big Brown Truck have the opportunity to see just how well it handles on the race track through an interactive display at Daytona International Speedway. Located outside the track between turns three and four, the display features 1:10-scaled models of the UPS package car and the #88 UPS Ford Taurus racing on a 20 x 20 racing surface. The display features an "in-truck" camera for fans to see all the action up close. Winners will receive a UPS Racing poster while all visitors to the display will receive Dale Jarrett/UPS Racing autograph cards and display bags.
Jarrett's Efforts Reward Susan G. Komen
Dale Jarrett's performance during the month of June proved to be exciting for Robert Yates Racing and UPS. It was also beneficial to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The win at Pocono and pole at Michigan secured a donation of $22,500 from Ford Credit on behalf of Dale Jarrett and the #88 UPS Racing Team. Ford Credit gave the Komen Foundation $10,000 for Jarrett's victory in Pocono, $5,000 for winning the pole in Michigan and $7,500 for his second-place finish in the same event. Ford Credit has been doing the performance-based donation since 1998, and has donated more than $600,000 in the less than four years since starting the program.
