TWO CARS DOWN, NEMECHEK HOPING THE THIRD IS THE CHARM

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 28, 2005) -- Since his two previous superspeedway cars have gone to the growing Nextel Cup junkyard, Joe Nemechek will be driving a new U.S. Army Chevrolet in Saturday night's Pepsi 400 here at Daytona International Speedway.

"We've taken a beating so far in the superspeedway races," said Nemechek. "We lost two good cars due to being collected in accidents. But this new car will be just as good, if not better."

The first casualty for Nemechek's 01 car was in the Gatorade Duel qualifying race at Daytona when he was one of the victims of the Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson encounter.

That incident forced Nemechek to drive the backup Army car in the Daytona 500 where he finished 13th. A couple months later that same car bit the dust when it got collected in the massive 25-car pile up at Talladega Superspeedway.

Since Talladega, the MB2 Motorsports engineers and fabrication department have built a new superspeedway car for Nemechek.

"Anytime you get a new superspeedway car from the MB2 guys you know it's going to be a stealth machine," said Nemechek. "Our (restrictor) plate program is top notch and that's why I am looking forward to having a strong race on Saturday."

Though he has a mind of an analytical engineer, Nemechek doesn't like to over analyze. His theory on being successful on a superspeedway is quite simple.

"Avoid the trouble and stay in the lead draft if you want to have a successful run at Daytona,"explained Nemechek. "You don't need a computer to tell you that."

Last year, Nemechek finished sixth and 10th at the two Daytona races. He is aiming for an equal or better performance in Saturday night's 400 miler.

"We need to bet back on that positive streak," said Nemechek, who had back-to-back finishes of third and sixth before posting a 23rd-place result in Sunday's road race in Sonoma, Calif. "Daytona is a track where we can make up some ground and get closer to that 400-point margin for making the Chase. That goal is still reachable for the Army team."

Nemechek is currently 17th in the Nextel Cup driver point standings and is 28 points shy of the 400-point magic number.
