DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (June 26, 2002) -- Ron Hornaday is subbing for the vacationing Shawna Robinson in the No. 49 BAM Racing Dodge during this week's two-day test session at Daytona International Speedway for the July 6 Pepsi 400.
But the two-time NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion is also keeping his eye on the race he'll run next week at the "World Center of Racing" - the inaugural STACKER 2/GNC Live Well 250 NASCAR Busch Series race on July 5.
While Hornaday is trying to fine-tune the No. 49 Dodge for BAM Racing, he also hopes to pull away some information for his No. 26 Dr. Pepper Chevrolet that he races in the NASCAR Busch Series with Carroll Racing.
Hornaday has run up front at Daytona in Winston Cup, Busch and the Craftsman Truck Series, but still hasn't recorded even a top-10 finish. He's geared up about next week's Busch Series event because he'll have a Dale Earnhardt Inc. motor under the hood.
"I like Daytona," Hornaday said. "I've run good here, but I just haven't finished well. Every time I've come here, I've been a rookie. This is one of the first times I haven't been a rookie with a yellow stripe so maybe I can get some help and some respect."
Also wrapping up the test session on Wednesday was Phoenix Racing. Geoffrey Bodine tested a Winston Cup car while Joe Ruttman shook down a Chevrolet and Pontiac that will be used in the STACKER 2/GNC Live Well 250. Kasey Kahne, driver of the No. 98 Channellock Ford for Robert Yates Racing, shortened their test and left on Tuesday.
In random hand-held times taken on Wednesday, Bodine and Ruttman were fastest, each turning laps in the 182.556 mph range.
Hornaday, who replaced Lyndon Amick at Carroll Racing in May, has quickly delivered results to the team. He has posted two top-10 finishes, including a third-place run and a pole position, in six starts.
"We're trying, but we haven't been finishing as good," Hornaday said. "(Crew chief) Todd (Lohse) and I get along real good. They believe in my driving style and I believe in what they're doing with the cars.
"We've got a few more things to work on. I think we'll be real strong toward the end of this year. We've got a couple of other things to try."
Tickets for the 44th annual Pepsi 400 and the STACKER 2/GNC Live Well 250 are available online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling the Speedway ticket office at (386) 253-7223.
