Stremme Finishes 16th in First Shootout at Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. David Stremme, driver of the No. 12 Penske Dodge Charger in the NASCAR Cup Series, got his first taste of what it will be like running wheel-to-wheel with the other top stars of NASCAR racing this season, under the lights at the World Center of Speed Saturday night.
The 31-year old Indiana native started the 75-lap all-star event from the 20th spot, but as soon as he saw the green flag, Stremme was on a mission towards the front of the field. In only three laps around the 2.5-mile superspeedway Stremme had his machine in the 12th position and was moving in on the leaders.
He radioed into crew chief Roy McCauley explaining the car was a little tight off the corners, but Stremme reported the No. 12 Penske Dodge was stable on both the top and bottom sides of the track.
On lap 23, coming off turn two, the 00 car came across the nose of the Penske Dodge Charger pushing Stremme into the grass on the backstretch. The Penske Racing driver did a phenomenal job keeping control of the car and not allowing it to hit the inside wall. The spin through the infield did cause some minor damage to the front splitter, as well as the right front fender.
Stremme and the Penske Racing team prepared to make repairs to the machine during the 10-minute break between segments, which came on lap 25. The team worked feverishly to repair the car. Members of the No. 12 crew worked on both the front and back of the Penske Dodge, making the necessary changes to get Stremme back out on the racing surface.
Stremme took the green flag again on lap 26 and was running in the 21st spot. He again called into his team explaining the car was tight and he was having trouble getting off the corners. The tight condition did not discourage Stremme from again making a charge towards the front of the field. By lap 50, he was battling in the lead pack, running in the 14th position.
With only two laps remaining in the 75-lap Shootout, Stremme was collected in an incident coming out of turn 4 which ended the teams chances for a victory.
It was a tough night, commented Stremme. It started when I got hit early and got shuffled back. It really tore the car upripped the splitter up. The guys did a great job repairing it, but it wasnt really the same after that. Once you get in the back of the field, its wild. It was a great experience. It was a crazy race. People were going three- and four-wide all night. I hope the Daytona 500 wont be like that, because it could be a long day.
Penske Racing teammate Kurt Busch finished eighth in Saturday nights race.
After participating in qualifying for the Daytona 500 on Sunday and the Gatorade Duel on Thursday, Stremme and the No. 12 Penske Dodge Charger return to racing action next Sunday at the Great American Race.
