The Fields Are Set For Gatorade 125's

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Feb. 11, 2002) -- While Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick have secured spots in the Daytona 500, everybody is else still fighting for a position in the "Great American Race."

On Monday following second-round qualifying, the fields were finalized for Thursday's Gatorade 125's, which will go green at 1 p.m. and fill positions 3-30 in the Daytona 500 lineup.

The fastest in second-round qualifying was Kyle Petty in the No. 45 Sprint Dodge with a speed of 183.061 mph. Other drivers participating in second-round qualifying were Mike Skinner (181.786), Kirk Shelmerdine (178.246) and Norm Benning (168.429).

While the pole winner, Johnson, and outside pole winner, Harvick, are locked into the starting grid, everybody else is locking horns for a starting position in the Gatorade 125's.

The top-14 finishers in each Gatorade 125 (with the exception of the already qualified pole winner and outside pole winner) earn positions 3-30 on the staring grid. The rest of the 43-car field is filled based on qualifying speeds and car owner provisional points.

Featured in the first Gatorade 125, are Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Ward Burton, Dale Jarrett, Ricky Rudd, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Sterling Marlin and Mark Martin. Among the drivers making up the second Gatorade 125 are Harvick, Robby Gordon, defending Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip, Bobby Labonte, Tony Stewart, Dave Marcis and Jimmy Spencer.

Spencer, who wheels the No. 41 Target Dodge for Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, is one of those drivers who doesn't have a fast enough speed or enough provisional points to make the Daytona 500 field, so he must race his way into the Daytona 500.

"I''ve got to finish in the top 15 Thursday (in Gatorade 125) or I'm going to the house," Spencer said. "I''ll drive as hard as I can Thursday, and circumstances might help me make the race or not make the race (Daytona 500). We're hoping circumstances fall in our favor and the Team Target Dodge stays up and finishes in the top 15."

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series got their first track time on Monday, participating in a couple of practice sessions. Ted Musgrave, driving the No. 1 Dodge for Ultra Motorsports, posted the fastest time of the day with a lap of 185.674 mph.

On tap for Tuesday at the Speedway is NASCAR Winston Cup practice, NASCAR Busch Series practice, True Value IROC practice and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series qualifying.

Tickets for all Speedweeks activities are still available online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling the Speedway ticket office (386) 253-7223.
