Three Cars, One Team, One Goal
Gilliland Takes Wheel of 38 at Monster Mile
Statesville, N.C. (September 21, 2010) - David Gilliland will take his strong qualifying record at Dover (Del.) International Speedway to the one-mile concrete oval this week, looking for a push in points for the No. 38 Taco Bell Ford during Sunday's AAA 400.
With last weekend's finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Front Row Motorsports' No. 38 car is now 36th in owner points, 110 points out of 35th. Front Row's three-car team has set a unified goal of getting the No. 38 back into the top 35 by the end of the season. In order to accomplish this objective, the driver best suited for the track will pilot the No. 38 entry.
Gilliland has proven he is a strong contender at Dover. He has eight starts at the track in his Sprint Cup career, with two top-20 finishes. He has qualified well at the track known as the "Monster Mile," earning starting positions as high as seventh.
Comments from Taco Bell Driver David Gilliland on Dover International Speedway and Front Row's Efforts on the No. 38 Car:
"I really like Dover. It's one of my favorite racetracks we go to. It's one of the faster tracks we go to as far as sensation of speed, and I really enjoy racing there. We're going to try something a bit different than we ran in the spring. We feel like we learned a lot the first time out there and we're going to build on that and obviously try to be a little better when we go back.
"Dover always seems to present a challenge. When they do the concrete, they have to cut expansion joints into the track so it can move. When you go across them as the tire pressures build up, those expansion joints really seem to upset the tire as it gets more and more air. It's something you work on when you go to Dover. Bristol is kind of the same way. So, that's one way that a concrete track presents its own challenge.
"Dover and Bristol are tough on you physically as a driver, but I like them. Dover's a great track. In the past, we've seemed to qualify pretty well there. So, I'm excited about going back. We're looking to start a little better and build on our finish from earlier in the year.
"Our first and foremost goal is to get that '38' back in the top 35 in owner points. So, here at Front Row Motorsports, it feels like everybody is pulling in the same direction. We're making some good progress. We moved up a spot last week in owner points, but we know we still have a ways to go to get it back into the top 35. But, everyone is working hard to make it happen. And I don't just mean whoever is in the car that week. Whether it's me or Travis (Kvapil) or Tony (Raines) or Dave (Blaney), everyone is working as one team toward this goal. If we can make a little progress each and every week, and some other things go our way concerning our competitors, we have a shot at it."
