Accident Short Circuits Smith's Race at Dover

DOVER, Del. (Sept. 27, 2009) -- Regan Smith saw his day cut short at Dover International Speedway as he was forced to retire from the race early due to being involved in a five-car accident.

Smith, who was running in the low to mid 20s prior to the mulitcar wreck on Lap 343 of 400, was credited with a 32nd-place finish in Sunday's AAA 400 Sprint Cup race.

"The 82 (Scott Speed) and I were side-by-side and all of a sudden my Furniture Row Chevy started to spin down track," explained Smith. "Things were happening pretty fast and it seemed like my car was a ping-pong ball as I was banging off a number of cars. It's too bad because I thought we had a decent run going. We were battling some handling issues, but overall it wasn't that bad."

Smith was not injured in the accident, but his car was severely damaged and not repairable.

"The car took a pretty good beating," said the 26-year-old Smith. "We're on a little bit of a bad-luck streak. This is the second straight race that an accident put us out early."

Prior to Smith's last race in Richmond, Va. (Sept. 12), Smith never had a DNF (did not finish) in his first 53 career Cup races.

Smith, who started Dover's 400-mile race from the 33rd position, picked away in track position early in the event and ran as low as 21st.

"We had a pretty good car and Regan did a good job," said crew chief Jay Guy. "He passed a number of cars and it was nice to see the Furniture Row Chevy gain in track position. We'll just chalk up today's race as one more learning experience."

The Denver-based Furniture Row Racing team is running a part-time schedule this season. The team's next race will be Oct. 11 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The team will also compete at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway (Nov. 1), Phoenix International Raceway (Nov. 15) and Homestead-Miami Speedway (Nov. 22).

The Furniture Row team is set to run a full 36-race schedule in 2010.
