RIGGS PROUD OF TEAM'S RECENT PERFORMANCE, AIMS TO CONTINUE AT DOVER
DOVER, Del. (May 31, 2005)-- Scott Riggs is proud of the way the Valvoline team ran at last weekend's Coca-Cola 600 and, despite the result, hopes the performance can jumpstart a string of successful finishes, starting with Sunday's MBNA RacePoints 400 at Dover International Speedway.
Running in the fifth position with fewer than 60 laps remaining in last week's event, the Valvoline Chevrolet experienced an engine problem, forcing the team to run its final laps on seven cylinders.
"That's exactly what the Valvoline team needed, a strong run," offered Riggs, who finished fifth in last year's June Dover race. "We didn't get the finish we were looking for but you can't do anything about anengine problem. That's just part of racing.
"We really struggled with the setup at the beginning of the race, so the fact that we got the car where we needed it and drove to the front is a credit tothe team."
"That's what we've struggled with lately," Riggs added. "The ability to find the right combination for the car early enough in the event to capitalize on it and that's what we were able to do last weekend. The way the race played out, I honestly think we had a shot at the victory."
Now Riggs is hopeful that the Valvoline team will accomplish the same task in this weekend's 400-lap event at Dover's Monster Mile.
"It's not easy to pass at Dover," explained Riggs. "You come off the corners too fast and the wall comes at you quickly," said Riggs. "Your car has to be a lot betterthan the one in front of you to be able to pull lower than them and get a run. So getting your car tuned in early is important. If you spend half the race trying to find the right combination, you'll lose your chance to drive to the front.
"Hopefully we can get a good starting spot for the Valvoline Chevy and then get it dialed in and up front. We're looking to bring home a top-10 or better finish this weekend."
Sunday's event will be broadcast live on FX beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET.
