Richmond, VA-- Early trouble has taken out the points leader Sterling Marlin on lap 10 of the 400 mile event under the lights.
Along with Marlin, his Ganassi teammate Jimmy Spencer and Roush Racing's Jeff Burton also suffered severe damage.
Marlin exited the car with a slight wince as he is being checked out in the infield care center. (Further updates to come.)
Burton's No. 99 got loose in turns three and four, spun and collected Marlin's No. 40 and Spencer's 41 Dodges. "I drove into the corner and it just got around on me." Burton said.
The race has been halted as clean-up continues. The field is waiting out the red flag on pit road.
Sterling Marlin has been evaluated at the infield care center. He suffered chest contusions and shoulder spasms. It is reported there are no broken bones.
Following a 16 minute red flag for the incident involving Marlin, Jimmy Spencer and Jeff Burton, the green flag waved only to find the yellow one lap later. Terry Labonte suffered severe damage after his No. 5 slammed the outside wall hard. Todd Bodine, Johnny Benson, and Bobby Labonte suffered only minor damage.
Comments from:
Sterling Marlin (No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We started in the back in the spring and got away with it, but we didn't make it tonight. It's really too bad because we wanted to make a run for that million dollar bonus. I'm not sure what happened. I saw Jimmy Spencer spin, and I tried to miss him but we got together. We've got 10 races left, and I guess it's going to be really tight after tonight. Jeff had some trouble, and it seems like when one of us has problems the other one does, too. We'll just do the best we can every week from here on out like we've been doing all season, add 'em up at Homestead and see where we stack up."
Jimmy Spencer (No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"The 99 car spun out and I got him from behind. A lot of cars started slowing down, me included. Me and Sterling were both going for the million, and I think we had a really good car. I wish we could have made a run for the money. I understand Sterling hit me, but I think his brakes locked up or something. It's hard to see through these cars, and we did everything we could. The track was a little on the slick side and it took both of the Ganassi Dodges out. I thought we had a good car. It was really fast on old tires, and that's really important here. Tires are critical anywhere now. I felt really good about it tonight, but it's just one of them deals. We didn't get a chance to show what we had tonight."
Al Shuford (Trainer Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates)
"Sterling has a chest contusion right in the middle of his chest and muscle spasms in both shoulders but no broken bones. He's just got a couple of bruises and a couple of muscle spasms. It's a long season, and Sterling has been very good about the things we've asked him to do to get in shape."
