Irvan released, no decision on Daytona yet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Oct. 12, 1998) Ernie Irvan, driver of the No. 36 Skittles Pontiac on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, was discharged from Carraway Methodist Medical Center shortly after 5 p.m. EDT Monday and arrived at his Mooresville, N.C., home Monday night along with his wife, Kim.

Irvan was involved in a multi-car crash in Sunday's Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway and was transported via helicopter to Carraway's Trauma Center where he was admitted and held for observation. Diagnostic tests revealed no internal injuries and no broken bones.

As of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, a team spokesperson said that a decision had not yet been made as to whether Irvan would race in Saturday's Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Irvan, who is part-owner of the No. 44 Federated Auto Parts Ford in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, had a meeting Monday afternoon with that team's sponsors, according to Andrea Spruell, his NASCAR Winston Cup Series spokesperson.

Irvan's Skittles Wild Berry Pontiac was destroyed in the accident on Sunday, and Spruell said that the crew was working feverishly to prepare a car for this Saturday's historic race at Daytona -- the first series race ever to be held under the lights at DIS.
