WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (August 10, 2001) -- American Le Mans Series regulars Ron Fellows and Boris Said qualified on Friday for Sunday's NASCAR Winston Cup Series race at the Watkins Glen International racing circuit.
The race is one of only two races on the stock car series' schedule that is held on a road course, and NASCAR team owners often hire experienced road racing veterans such as Fellows and Said to pilot their cars in the events. The race starts at 1 p.m. (EDT) and will be televised live on NBC.
Fellows, driving the Bully Hill Vineyards Chevrolet owned by NASCAR driver Joe Nemechek, qualified sixth in the 43-car field. Driving the same car in June, Fellows led some of the NASCAR event at California's Sears Point Raceway, the other road course stop for the series. He was eliminated from that event after tangling with Bill Elliott.
Said, driving the Jasper Engines Ford, qualified 20th. He also drove for the team at Sears Point.
Fellows, from Canada, is the current leader of the GTS class point standings in the American Le Mans Series, where he drives for factory-backed Corvette Racing. He and co-driver Johnny O'Connell have won three of the four ALMS races held this season, including the last two. He was also the GTS class winner in June in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, driving with O'Connell and Scott Pruett.
Said, from Carlsbad, Calif., is third in the GT class point standings in the ALMS. He drives for BMW Team PTG with co-driver Hans Stuck, and the duo won the most recent series race last weekend at Portland, Ore.
The next race for the American Le Mans Series is the GT3 Grand Prix at Mosport on Sunday, August 19, at Mosport International Raceway near Toronto.
