How was your qualifying run? "It was a good run for the NAPA Toyota. We had a crazy kind of day today. In practice we started off really, really bad and kind of messed around with that setup a little bit trying to do some race trim stuff and really didn't get anywhere. We went to qualifying trim, made some changes and it still wasn't good. Then we completely changed it again for the very last run and we made huge improvements on the car. Right there it was actually really close. I'm excited about tomorrow because of the headway we made today and hopefully the rest of the weekend will go really well."

Why are your pit crew members wearing red shoe laces? "Pat (Tryson, crew chief) has those weird shoes that he got a few weeks ago. I don't know, they all decided to go with red laces because he had them to try to change our luck. So far it's working."

Did you make many changes before qualifying? "Took a pretty big swing. I was really struggling with the car -- getting it into the turns. The nose was bouncing a lot. Zip (Greg Zipadelli, crew chief) and the guys did a good job. I was pretty pumped up about it. I was kind of surprised about how good it was and how hard I was able to push it. I was pretty happy with that lap. I don't know where it is going to put us there. Should be better than what we were in practice."

Do you enjoy racing at California? "I do enjoy this place. I consider it one of my better race tracks -- to be honest with you. I always run good in the Nationwide car here. I feel like my Cup stuff is definitely getting there, little by little. I feel like this is a good qualifying run for us. I feel like our race car is going to be pretty good. We'll see what happens."

Does California present any unusual challenges? "Every place has its own challenges, for sure. This place definitely -- getting over the seams, the bumps -- that definitely makes it extra challenging, if you want to say that. It's kind of part of it. It's similar to Michigan -- over the seams and fighting all that stuff. You're carrying a lot of speed. The restarts are crazy. You have to time your passes pretty good."

How did your car handle during qualifying? "Our M&M's Camry was just a little too tight. I felt like I got through (turns) one and two pretty well, but not as good down in (turn) three and (turn) four. Hopefully that gives us a decent starting spot and we'll work on it in race trim tomorrow and get ready for Sunday."

How loose was your race car? "It was really, really loose. I couldn't quite seem to get it tightened up. Our first qualifying run in the Aaron's Dream Machine was pretty good and then I screwed up the second run. So, I kind of messed us up there. We didn't know exactly what we were going to have to do to be fast. Bit of a disappointment. But, hope we'll have a good car for the race."

Is the message from your 'incident' with Kyle Busch is that all drivers deserve respect? "I don't know if it quite goes that deep. I think I've probably said enough on the subject. It's unfortunate it happened. It tore up two good race cars and that's unfortunate. In the end, all you have to do is go out there and race -- that's all you've got to do. There's no need to run over a car. It was unfortunate. It messed both of our days -- the 18 and 00 -- and it didn't really need to happen. Hopefully, we'll get past that and go on and race."

How was your qualifying run? "We had a tough practice in qualifying trim. We changed about 15 things. When it's like that it's hard to bust off a lap. The car was close and we'll be in the front half of the field -- which is going to help us a lot on Sunday."

Do you enjoy racing in California? "Yeah. I like racing here. I love racing every week. The only place that I don't like is Martinsville because I get so torn up there."

How was your qualifying run? "We've struggled with it. Normally, this has been a really good track for us, but we've struggled a little bit so far this weekend. We made some pretty good changes there before qualifying and that put us a lot closer in the hunt. We got to keep working on it, of course."
