Ford officially announced Monday that it will not make Thunderbirds in the 1998 model year, but the impact that decision will have on racing won't be known for at least several weeks. Ford race teams could still run Thunderbirds for two more years under NASCAR rules, but it makes little business sense for the company to be racing a car it isn't selling. The Taurus has been mentioned as a likely replacement model.
NASCAR Fans is hearing that the Taurus is not supplying the kind of downforce that the Ford teams were hoping so, who knows what's next.
