Bob Keselowski won the Virginia Is For Lovers 200 Craftsman Truck race by a commanding 3+ seconds last night. It was his first Craftsman Truck racing victory. ``I wouldn't even look up to see them count the laps down, I didn't want to know,'' Keselowski said. Keselowski, 46, struggled to make it through his first two seasons on the truck series with limited sponsorship. Before this season, however, he picked up the Mopar Performance sponsorship from Chrysler. ``Boy, I needed this one bad,'' said Keselowski, whose first win came in his 59th career truck start. ``We are just starting to get all the big haulers and the shop and everything. I don't want to lose it now, it took me 40-something years to get this point.'' (charlotte.com)
Michael Waltrip won the pole for tonight's Autolite Platinum 250 Busch race with a speed of 122.227. He edged, and I mean edged Steve Park for the pole by .002 seconds. Waltrip commented that he didn't think the clock worked that close.
Tim Brewer, the one-time Bowman Gray Stadium kid who got his first NASCAR license when he was 14, has been around the track more than once, and he's still coming back for more.
Brewer is on the comeback trail again, this time as team manager for Geoff Bodine. After a very tough season, Bodine has new partners, Jim Mattei and John Porter, and things are changing in the old Alan Kulwicki shops behind Charlotte Motor Speedway.
''Geoff Bodine and I have both been kicked around and beat up a little bit, and we're looking to return some of those favors now,'' Brewer said. ''I think Geoff and I appreciate each other more than we did perhaps in the middle of 1991.''
Despite a dramatic mid-race loss of Pat Tryson as crew chief at Bristol, Brewer and Bodine are making some steady progress, with a ninth at Bristol and 12th at Darlington.
Now they're back at the track where Bodine nearly won in the spring.
''Richmond is a lot of fun to race on because it is forgiving, and there are a couple of grooves, if you can work the outside groove in,'' Bodine said.
But there is a sealer on the track, and that could be a factor in today's pole runs.
''We canceled our Truck test because of the sealer, and we heard it was pretty slippery,'' Bodine said. ''But hopefully the grip will be there.
''We did have a really good run in the spring, and I feel our team is stronger than it was then. I know our engine program is stronger. I've run well at Richmond many, many times, going back to those times with Tim and Junior, we led just about every time we ran.'' (Mike Mulhern, JournalNow)
NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division standout Phil Parsons and Channellock have elected not to continue their sponsorship for 1998. Both Parsons and Channellock made the joint announcement citing current individual needs to move forward with future plans. (NASCAR Online)
