Sterling Marlin Battles To Top-10 Finish At Bristol
No. 40 Target Dodge finishes in ninth place

BRISTOL, Tenn. (August 25, 2001) - The No. 40 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Sterling Marlin finished ninth in the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. This marks the 13th time this season that Marlin has finished in the top-10.

The No. 40 Target Dodge began the race in 17th position and Marlin battled in the top-15 until late in the 500-lap event.

"The car was real good yesterday, but we started the race and it was real tight," Marlin said. "I don't know if the spring came out on the pit stop or what, but we just never got the car freed up. It was real tight all night."

On lap 352 the Target Dodge came in for their last pit stop of the night. The team completed a four tire and fuel pit stop in 15.80 seconds and put Marlin in position for a top-10 finish.

"The crew did a great job for us," said McCall. "It's hard to expect a whole lot when you're making a ton of adjustments but the guys did a great job of keeping us in the top-20 all night. Sterling did a great job driving. We didn't have a great car but he got up on the wheel and pulled us in a top-10."

"What we went through tonight, I'm real happy with ninth," Marlin said. "We didn't get close to any wrecks, and that's a big plus here."

With his ninth place finish, Marlin stayed fourth overall in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship points standings and is 39 points out of third place.

"It looks like the top five guys are there every week," Marlin said. "It's
going to be hard to gain much. We're just taking it week by week. Next
week we're going to Darlington. I like that place. We run good there."

Next on the schedule for the No. 40 Coors Light team is the Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway on Sunday, Sept. 2.
