Changes at Yates: The No. 88 Ford team of Dale Jarrett accepted the resignation of crew chief Mike Ford this week. Billy Wilburn will take over as the interim crew chief until a permanent replacement can be found.
"Mike (Ford) made this decision based on what was in the best interest for himself and for his family," said Eddie D'Hondt, general manager for RYR. "We obviously wish him the best in his future endeavors."
The team also released their pit crew coach Russ Salerno. The No. 38 teams coach, Andy Ward, will take over the role. Two Busch crew chiefs fined after Richmond: From press release: Teddy Brown, crew chief of the No. 34 Chevrolet driven by Randy LaJoie and Gordon Gibbs, crew chief for the No. 57 Chevrolet driven by Kyle Busch, were each fined $2,500 after being found in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 12-4-CC (unapproved gear ratio). Wallace to replace Waltrip on "Trackside": Veteran driver Rusty Wallace, who is set to retire at the end of this season, will fill Michael Waltrip's seat on Speed Channel's "Trackside" beginning the second half of this season.
Bones found at NASCAR site: The proposed Staten Island site to build a racetrack is actually an ancient Indian burial ground, anthropologists state. Bones were recovered on the site recently prompting Edward Platt, President of the New York Institute of Anthropology to do his own research.
He has documented proof of burial grounds and ancient Indian villages within the 700-acre property. In the 16th century, Staten Island was part of a region inhabited by the Lenape part of the Algonquin tribe.
Platt anticipates other relics besides bones existing on the property and has asked for access to survey the site.
International Speedway Corporation has proposed to build an 80,000-seat track on the land located on the West Shore of Staten Island.
Pit Crew challenge tonight: Twenty-four of NASCAR's premiere Cup pit crews will descend on the Charlotte Coliseum for the Nextel All-Star Pit Crew Challenge tonight.
The first round two teams will compete against the clock with four members of each team stationed in "boxes". At each position, a crewmember will hit a button to stop the time. The times will be used to determine individual winners.
The winner at each position wins $10,000.
After each individual skill is clocked the team then pushes the car across the finish line. The top-eight teams will advance to the next round.
In round two, the teams will face each other head-to-head to battle for the $70,000 purse.
First time winner Kahne spreading health news: Kasey Kahne, who earned his first career win last weekend in Richmond, was in Washington DC this week spreading the word about tetanus.
"I'm up here for a tetanus awareness program to let people know and remind them that you need to get your tetanus shot every 10 years whether you're a kid or an adult," said Kahne. "A lot of adults over the age of 20 kind of forget about it. It's good to remind everybody so you don't have to go through anything bad that has to do with tetanus."
