Vickers takes politically correct line on Stewart sitch: "It's NASCAR's decision. I don't disagree with it. I respect their decision.

Apparently, Stewart has not taken the time to apologize to Vickers for the slap at Sonoma:

"I haven't spoken with him. I'd be happy to talk to him."

Stewart's only comment was released through Joe Gibbs Racing, "I understand and accept NASCAR's penalty. With NASCAR's continued growth and their rise in mainstream popularity, I realize their rules have become stricter than they were in the past. And after meeting with Brian France (NASCAR Chairman and CEO), I know it's my job to live within those rules. I'm putting this incident behind me and I plan no further comments. I'm going to focus on Daytona and the remaining races before the final 10-race run for the championship."

Yates to go Busch racing: Robert Yates Racing plans on starting a Busch team next season. Possible drivers for the car include David Regan, son of former Cup driver Ken Regan.

No word on a sponsor, but CitiFinancial which just signed on as an associate sponsor on the No. 38 and No. 88 is a leading candidate.

Holy Hooters: Martin Truex, Jr. and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. served as the judges for the annual Miss Hooters contest.

Would have loved to been a fly on the wall for that.

Gordon looking stout: Fresh off his win at Sonoma, four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon looks primed for a fifth title. Gordon was fastest in Thursday's practice session, beating the No. 10 Chevy of Scott Riggs and the DEI cars of Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Gordon's lap of 188.308 mph, bested Riggs lap of 188.194 mph. Waltrip and Earnhardt were third and fourth quickest.

Ford's also fast: Ford racers, Greg Biffle, Elliott Sadler, and Ricky Rudd charted the sixth, seventh, and eighth fastest times during practice 1 for NEXTEL Cup teams.

Sadler is a favorite to win this weekend: After a strong showing at Daytona in February, Elliott Sadler is the name on everyone's lips at Daytona as a candidate to pull into victory lane Saturday night. In February, Sadler won the second Gatorade 125 event, qualified second for the season-opening Daytona 500 and finished 7th in the race.
