Bodine out of hospital, resting at home By Marty Smith and Dave Rodman
CONCORD, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2000) In a recovery of miraculous proportions, NASCAR Winston Cup Series legend Geoffrey Bodine was released from Halifax Medical Center Tuesday morning and arrived home by plane at approximately 11:30 a.m. ET. His release came just four days after he was hospitalized following a spectacular crash at Daytona International Speedway. Upon his arrival at Concord Regional Airport, Bodine emerged from the plane under his own power, where he was met by Joe and Nancy Bessey, the owners of his No. 60 Power Team Chevrolet in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
Bodine conducted a brief television interview, then got into a waiting car and headed straight to a Charlotte-area orthopedic surgeon to examine his broken right wrist and determine whether surgery was needed. If so, that surgery will likely take place Wednesday, according to a team spokesman.
Bodine suffered a concussion, multiple bruises and lacerations, burns, a fractured right wrist; a fractured mid-back vertebra; and a sprained toe on his left foot in a crash during the inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at DIS Friday.
The accident occurred as the tightly packed field of trucks passed the start/finish line to complete the 56th of 100 laps. Few of those involved knew exactly what had occurred, although television replays indicated two trucks moved down and up, respectively, on rookie Kurt Busch's truck.
Bodine's No. 15 Line-X Ford was struck than twice by other trucks as it tumbled down the frontstretch. The truck was knocked into the catch fence in front of the main grandstand and showed flashes of flame three times.
After a short period Bodine, who was running ninth in the 36-truck field at the time, was removed from the hulk of his truck, which came to rest upside down in the middle of the short chute between the start/finish line and Turn 1.
Monday, NASCAR Winston Cup Series veteran Ted Musgrave was announced as the replacement driver for Bodine in the No. 60 Power Team Chevrolet on a race-to-race basis.
