Gordon Familiar with Winston's Bonuses at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. (March 27) -- Jeff Gordon has parlayed his Talladega Superspeedway success into wealthy bonuses the last two seasons, and has the opportunity to add another $100,000 bonus with a victory in the Winston 500 April 27. Gordon's Daytona 500 victory made him eligible for the Winston Million, a $1-million bonus offered by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. to any driver who can win three of the sport's four "Crown Jewels." A victory in the Winston 500 at Talladega will put him two-thirds of the way there and also will earn him the $100,000 "Winston Bonus" for winning two of the four races. But collecting bonus money at Talladega from the series sponsor is nothing new for the 1995 NASCAR Winston Cup champion. In 1995, Gordon collected a $100,000 bonus from Winston for leading the standings following the Winston 500. Last season he collected a $160,000 bonus for winning the Sears DieHard 500 at Talladega and leading the NASCAR Winston Cup standings following the event. Since the inception of the Winston Million in 1985, only two Daytona 500 winners have won the Winston 500 at Talladega. Bill Elliott won both events in 1985, while the late Davey Allison accomplished the feat in 1992. Only Elliott went on to win the Winston Million. Cale Yarborough in 1984, Buddy Baker in 1980 and Pete Hamilton in 1970 are the only other drivers to take the Daytona 500 and Winston 500 checkered flags in the same season. Advance Auto Parts Qualifying Day for the Winston 500 Busch Pole is Friday, April 25. Tickets are still available for both the Winston 500 on Sunday, April 27, at 12 noon Central and for Advance Auto Parts Qualifying Day. Advance reserved seat tickets are also available for the other half of Track Attack Weekend -- the Birmingham Automobile Dealers 500K presented by EasyCare NASCAR Busch Series event, scheduled for Saturday, April 26. For ticket orders, call the Talladega ticket office at (205) 362-9064.
